Robert J. McDonald is a Managing Director for True Partners Consulting. He has more than 22 years of experience in all areas of Federal income taxes, including tax structuring, tax planning, consulting and compliance for business enterprises (both privately- and publicly-held), individuals and estate planning.

Having served as a federal income tax consultant and advisor for over 22 years, with an emphasis on real estate-related companies, his experience includes representing publicly-traded and closely-held corporations, Real Estate Investment Trusts, publicly-traded and privately-owned pass-through entities, opportunity funds, tax-exempt investors, foreign investors, and family-owned and operated business enterprises. Over the past 22 years, he has served clients in all categories of the real estate industry, including REITS, operating companies, owner/operators, investors, the hotel industry, construction companies, homebuilders, mortgage lenders, developers, management companies, brokers, and other advisory companies.

Bob’s consulting practice centers around structuring, restructuring and negotiation of business transactions from both a tax and non-tax standpoint including:

• the structuring of taxable and nontaxable stock and asset purchases
• planning for debt workouts and restructurings
• structuring real and phantom equity plans for executives
• structuring complex partnership and joint venture arrangements and
• providing advice on tax deferred like kind exchanges and installment sale transactions
• acquisition due diligence for public REIT acquisitions, opportunity fund acquisitions and private operating company acquisitions

In addition to overseeing a business-related consulting practice, Bob has also been responsible for tax planning and consulting centering on the tax consequences to individual owners of significant business enterprises.

Prior to joining True Partners, he was at KPMG, LLP for 21 years, where he served as a partner in the Federal Income Tax Group of and was the Midwest Area Tax Services Leader for the real estate industry, construction industry, and the hospitality industry.

Bob received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Illinois State University and a Master of Science in Taxation from DePaul University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Illinois CPA society (including past President of the Real Estate Committee), and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts. He has taught several real estate and partnership taxation courses over the years. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Christopher House (a non-profit organization) as a member of the finance committee.
